How does it work
what3words divides the world into a grid of 3-metre-by-3-metre squares.
Each square is assigned a unique combination of three words, written like:
///word.word.word
For example, one specific building entrance, trail location, or parking space might have its own three-word address.
You use it like this:
1. Open the what3words app or website.
2. Search for an address, or tap the map to find the three words for your current location.
3. Share those three words with someone.
4. The recipient can enter them into what3words and then use a navigation app to reach the location.
The words are essentially an easier-to-remember label for geographic coordinates. The system can convert between the three words and latitude/longitude, so it’s useful for places that don’t have clear street addresses—such as parks, beaches, hiking trails, event entrances, or delivery points. Each address is fixed to its square rather than to a building or road, and the service is available in many languages. what3words.com2
One important practical point: nearby squares can have similar-sounding words, so read the address carefully—especially when giving it by phone in an emergency. It’s best to also provide landmarks or other location details when possible.
